To understand what it takes to become a member of the Reveille North Houston Organization one must first understand the 12th Man tradition at Texas A&M University (TAMU), which started in Dallas on January 2, 1922, at the Dixie Classic, the forerunner of the Cotton Bowl Classic. TAMU was playing defending national champion Centre College in the first postseason game in the southwest. During the hard-fought competition, which obtained national publicity, the underdog Aggie team was slowly defeating a team that had allowed less than six points per game. The first half resulted in so many injuries for TAMU that Coach Dana X. Bible feared he would not have enough men to finish the contest. Thus, he called into the Aggie section of the stands for E. King Gill, a student who had left football after the regular season to play basketball.
Gill, who was “spotting players” (i.e., recording the names and numbers of those with significant exploits) for a Waco newspaper and who was not in football attire, put on the uniform of injured player Heine Weir and stood on the sidelines in case he was needed. Although he never played in the game, his readiness demonstrated the willingness of true TAMU Aggies to support their team to the point of entering into battle, which is why students remain erect and on their feet during football games at Kyle Field. After the contest ended in a 22-14 Aggie victory, Gill was the only man left upright on the sidelines for the Aggies, and he later remarked, “I wish I could say that I went in and ran for the winning touchdown, but I did not. I simply stood by in case my team needed me.”
A 12-foot-high, bronze statue of E. King Gill (shown in the above picture obtained from tamu.edu) stands in the east plaza of Kyle Field as a reminder to TAMU Aggies of their perpetual obligation to preserve the spirit of the 12th Man. This said to keep the 12th Man Spirit “alive,” an individual must attend twelve meetings of the Reveille North Houston Organization to be considered a member and must continue attending on a regular basis to be regarded as “active.”
